Synopsis: "Everyone wanted to believe that endless love was possible. She'd believed in it once, too, back when she was eighteen."

In the spring of 1984, high school students Amanda Collier and Dawson Cole fell deeply, irrevocably in love. Though they were from opposite sides of the tracks, their love for one another seemed to defy the realities of life in the small town of Oriental, North Carolina. But as the summer of their senior year came to a close, unforeseen events would tear the young couple apart, setting them on radically divergent paths. Now, twenty-five years later, Amanda and Dawson are summoned back to Oriental for the funeral of Tuck Hostetler, the mentor who once gave shelter to their high school romance. Neither has lived the life they imagined . . . and neither can forget the passionate first love that forever changed their lives. As Amanda and Dawson carry out the instructions Tuck left behind for them, they realize that everything they thought they knew -- about Tuck, about themselves, and about the dreams they held dear -- was not as it seemed. Forced to confront painful memories, the two former lovers will discover undeniable truths about the choices they have made. And in the course of a single, searing weekend, they will ask of the living, and the dead: Can love truly rewrite the past?"

I've always been a fan of Nicholas Sparks, so of course I had to read this novel! I think he's an amazing writer, with many depressing novels.. This happens to be one of them. My favorite character would have to be Dawson Cole, he is the like the sweetest and kindest male character to ever probably exist. He has only made one unintentional mistake and regrets it, when people in real life don't even regret bad intentional actions. All he really wants is Amanda's happiness.

  • Even now, I remember his character and the sacrifices he made, and it makes me teary. I feel Amanda didn't deserve him in any way possible. She was a good girl/woman sure, but kind of selfish. I feel she should have fought for Dawson not just when they were together in high school, but even the next time she saw him. I feel like she should have waited or at least tried to contact him throughout the years .. You're a forty year old something woman now, stop talking orders from your mother.
  • Dawson choose to stay away because he loved her, because her parents disapproved of him and their class differences. He just honored their wish. Honestly, Dawson never married, dated or even had any kind of contact with any woman after Amanda left. Twenty-five long years, imagine that. That's unrealistic. Why can't men like Dawson exist in real life?! I want to know from Nicholas Spark's - Why does the male always love the female much more than the female in his novels? Not cool.

  • In reality, the female seems to compromise and gives more. Thank you for providing an unrealistic man. I'm just kidding though, of course, there can be some exceptions. By the end of this novel, I was bawling over. This was an amazing story and it is well written. I didn't see the plot twist coming at first though. However. it became predictable at the near end since I'm familiar with his endings. Some people don't like the novel because of the ending, but I sort of disagree. Without this ending, it wouldn't be a Nicholas Spark's novel. I do wish it was a happy ending though.
  • Sparks is clearly talented, and I enjoyed this novel from the start to finish. I love most of his novels except maybe The Notebook. It's an engaging read, that had me flipping pages even early in the morning. I'm most definitely going to watch the movie, thank God I will be prepared this time for it. The story is similar to his other novels. Again, the ending some won't like, but I loved it.
  •  I would recommend reading the novel first, because the movies sometimes aren't as good as the books though. In the movie trailer, the forty two year old Dawson had short hair, while in the book he had long hair, so yes check out the book first. Minor differences count! The forty two year old Dawson looked much younger than the high school Dawson. I LOL'ed so hard at that part. It's 4 butterflies for me.

  8. Great review. I feel like men are more likely to be unrealistic in books whereas women are more realistic. But I'm okay with it, after all it's fiction.

  10. I can't imagine any guy going 25 years without touching a woman.... It doesn't seem realistic. Glad to see that you enjoyed it though. I haven't seen the movie, but you have me curious about it now!
