I'll Meet You There

  • Publisher: Henry Holt and Co.(February 3, 2015)
  • Genre: Contemporary Romance
  • Source: Personal Purchase

  • Synopsis: "If seventeen-year-old Skylar Evans were a typical Creek View girl, her future would involve a double-wide trailer, a baby on her hip, and the graveyard shift at Taco Bell. But after graduation, the only thing standing between straightedge Skylar and art school are three minimum-wage months of summer. Skylar can taste the freedom—that is, until her mother loses her job and everything starts coming apart. Torn between her dreams and the people she loves, Skylar realizes everything she’s ever worked for is on the line. Nineteen-year-old Josh Mitchell had a different ticket out of Creek View: the Marines. But after his leg is blown off in Afghanistan, he returns home, a shell of the cocksure boy he used to be.

  • What brings Skylar and Josh together is working at the Paradise—a quirky motel off California’s dusty Highway 99. Despite their differences, their shared isolation turns into an unexpected friendship and soon, something deeper."

  •  Our protagonist Skylar Evans is from the poor side of Creek View, she fits into the stereotype of "trailer trash." She lives in a trailer with her mother. Skylar wants to leave her hometown, and study at art school - but she cannot exactly afford it at the moment. Josh Mitchell is our male lead in the story, he's a solider from the Marines, he has lost his leg in Afghanistan due to war time, and now he has returned home. Slowly, but surely they develop a friendship - which blossoms into "something deeper."

  • I actually picked up this novel, because a fellow book blogger Karan @ From What's it Worth had loved it, and I also noticed the positive reviews on Goodreads. At first sight, I dismissed it because the cover didn't appeal to me as much and I thought it might be a typical novel. I. WAS. COMPLETELY. WRONG. This novel is one of the reasons I still believe good books exist. I'll Meet You there deserves all the hype it has gotten, it's one of the most beautiful and moving novels I have read. It reminded a bit of Me Before You. When I first started reading, it did take me two chapters to get into this novel, I actually thought of DNF'ed it because the first chapter is about a party but then I kept reading just to see if it gets any better .. and IT DID.
  • I'll Meet You There does have a cliche concept of the good girl, and bad boy - but let's keep in mind Josh Mitchell is no longer a bad boy. He has changed due to war time, and he no longer has one of his legs. He's actually a reformed bad boy, but not exactly that good either.. He's flawed, but that's the reason I liked his character so much. He's actually the main reason I loved this novel, he made me laugh, and then cry - Where are guys like this in reality ?? I liked Skylar a.k.a Sky as well, she was hilarious, caring, kind, and she has big dreams. I liked that there was a friendship with Sky and Josh, she treated him like a normal person. She even joked with him about his leg. I'm glad it wasn't instant love. Even though, they had their differences, they found comfort with each other. I was rooting for their romance all the way!
  • The two, separate perspectives of both characters were great too - you could read about two sides of the same story. I liked the focus of Josh and Sky's lives with their families as well. There's not much focus on Josh's, but the relationship between Sky and her mother was saddening - I did like reading about that, it opens the reader's mind to family conflict. Heather Demetrios sure writes in a way that engages the reader - I couldn't stop reading this book until I had gotten to the very end. This book made me smile, I laughed a long with the characters, and I did cry. If you want to read a contemporary romance, I would quite recommend reading this one. It's an emotional read with such a beautiful concept so get some tissues ready. I haven't read that any books where the male lead has a disability besides two books. I can't say which two books without spoiling it if you haven't read them.
  •  Overall, THIS NOVEL IS AMAZING. It is an emotional read, but also hilarious - so get some tissues ready. It makes you think about people with disabilities, and also about the soldiers who try to protect their country and fight for it. It's not just about love and romance, it's also about self-discovery and following your dreams. It's realistic, and the romance was swoon worthy. I'll Meet You There is easily one of my newest favorite novels, this is 5 out of 5; I would read it again. This was my first time trying this author's work, and I look forward to more of her books.

  1. Hmm... I previously had no intention of reading this book because like you I saw the cover and thought it would probably be clichéd. But I have seen SO many positive reviews, yours included! So maybe it is time for me to pick this one up and add it to the TBR. I have heard so many great things about Josh as a character as well :3

Glad you managed to say what you wanted to say about it, especially with ones that you love (I always seem to tend to babble on about anything but the book because I can't get my feelings about it down, haha.) :) I'm reading it next, so excited! :D

  21. The premise of this book really draws me in! I love the sound of the main character, she intrigues me. I also want to pick it up because of the other character Josh, because of being a Marine. My husband's a Marine. So I do have personal experience with soldiers who have been to Afghanistan. So I enjoy reading books that deal with that aspect from time to time. I'm glad you enjoyed this one so much! I definitely am going to read it when I can!

    Lovely review!

  26. I'm so happy you loved it!

I think she takes a story that has been told before (trailer park girl, reformed bad boy) but infuses it with such authenticity.

I also loved how both Sky and Josh are more than just their romance. A really layered story…It gives me hope too.

Do you read Sarina Bowen's The Ivy Years NA novels? She deals a lot with disabilities/diversity in a non cliche way.
