Party Games by R.L Stine Review ♥

Who remembers R.L Stine from their childhood??
If you love books, but haven't read R.L Stine when you were younger - then I'm not sure what to tell you. I have read almost EVERY SINGLE BOOK of his when I was a teenager.

I like his Goosebumps series as well, but it was more paranormal and super creepy to read as a twelve year old - Here are my favorite books from his work. Beach Party, The Cheater, and The Boyfriend are my all-time favorites - those are the books I can still read today and I still love them.

R.L Stine has recently made a comeback with the launch of his new novel, Party Games after a WHOLE DECADE!
Below is my review on it.

  • Synopsis: R.L. Stine's hugely successful young adult horror series Fear Street is back with the first new book in almost 2 decades. With more than 80 million copies sold around the world, Fear Street is one of the bestselling young adult series of all time. Now, with Party Games, R.L. Stine revives this phenomenon for a new generation of teen readers, and the announcement of new Fear Street books caused a flurry of excitement both in the press and on social media, where fans rejoiced that the series was coming back. Her friends warn her not to go to Brendan Fear's birthday party at his family's estate on mysterious Fear Island. But Rachel Martin has a crush on Brendan and is excited to be invited. Brendan has a lot of party games planned. But one game no one planned intrudes on his party—the game of murder. As the guests start dying one by one, Rachel realizes to her horror that she and the other teenagers are trapped on the tiny island with someone who may want to kill them all. How to escape this deadly game? Rachel doesn't know whom she can trust. She should have realized that nothing is as it seems… on Fear Island. R.L. Stine makes his triumphant return to Shadyside, a town of nightmares, shadows, and genuine terror, and to the bestselling series that began his career writing horror for the juvenile market, in the new Fear Street book Party Games.

  •  I was quite excited when I heard R.L Stine's latest installment of the Fear Street series is coming out soon. I missed reading his books! I've read every single novel of his fear street series during my frequent trips to the library. I've liked most of them if not all, I cannot recall ever disliking a novel written by him. What can I say about Party Games? Rachel Martin is crushing on Brendan Fear. He's a Fear, so is everyone around him destined for doomed? Let's see.. Soon, she is invited to his birthday bash held at an island with many other guests. Once they reach the island, one by one each teenager starts dying.. There is a murderer on the island. The opening of the novel was great, Stine always had a way with writing - it's usually grips the reader to the very end. I couldn't wait to find out what happens next in the book.
  • The romance between Rachel and Brendan felt forced and awkward though, I couldn't find good character development of these two people. I did love Brendan's best friend a lot more, he was my most favorite character - he was hilarious, sweet and wild. The friendship between Rachel and him was more interesting - I wish she could have been with him instead.
  •  When the book indulged into 20% of the novel, the plot was turned into a horror movie, I couldn't find an actual story. The idea of a murder at a party is interesting, but the plot is a bit overused. I don't think it's because I'm an adult now or my tastes differ because I still love re-reading his previous books even today. I did like the suspense of the novel though, the plot twists were pretty great though - I didn't see them coming, the novel wasn't predictable at all. The premise was fantastic though, it's so R.L Stine but the dialogue and plot was quite cheesy. It was too similar to the movie April Fools Day. Ultimately, this isn't R.L Stines best, but it is still a light, fun read. I do look forward to more of the author's work though, I'm still a fan.

Recommended for fans of April Fool's Day, and All Night Party.

  1. I haven't read any of these books as a child! I was much more into the Goosebumps series instead. It's cool that he is publishing books again - I have been seeing many people reading Don't Stay Up Too Late by him, and I think that is also a new release. It's a shame this one didn't seem to match up with the others, it seems a bit cliché.

  4. Awww this is such a shame! I've seen reviews for his new release book, Don't Stay Up Late and haven't heard good things either. I used to love the Goosebumps and I totally remember reading Beach Party when I was young. I guess we have just outgrown his writing. Great review!

  5. It's always so interesting to go back to books you read as a kid and see if they hold up. Sometimes yes, sometimes not.

  6. I know, girl. I know. I was a Goosebumps/Fear Street kid back in the days. I read his latest book, though, Don't Stay Up Late, and hated it :/ It felt so flat and so boring and so... empty, but I feel like I could love this one since it feels more mature somehow, despite the fact the plot is overused. Murderers in a party still has that certain, thrilling charm XD

    1. Aahh.. I have yet to read Don't Stay Up Late, this one was alright though - it wasn't too bad, it reminded me a bit of All Night Party. I hope the rest of his books get better though!

  7. I was such a goosebumps fan as a little kid - and a fear street lover when I was in middle school. He scared the crap outta me! Sadly, I keep seeing bad reviews for the new books and it makes me sad :( Perhaps they are for a younger age group and we don't see that until we try them out as adults?

    1. Yes, that could be it - I do see some of the cheesiness I might have missed when I was a young teen, I still love reading some of his oldies though.

    3. & Oh, my all-time favorite novel would have to be The Cheater. I actually found the book in 6th grade where someone left it, it was meant to be! 😍

  10. I've only read half of a Goosebumps book when I was eight, I freaked out! I completely forgot about these books, I really want to check them out now that I'm older (and hopefully braver!)
Party Games sounds interesting, that's awesome suspenseful even though some of the dialog was a bit cheesy. Thanks for the review Benish! :)
