  • Synopsis: On a dark Kentucky night in 1952 exactly halfway between her fifteenth and sixteenth birthdays, Annie Holleran crosses into forbidden territory. Everyone knows Hollerans don’t go near Baines, not since Joseph Carl was buried two decades before, but, armed with a silver-handled flashlight, Annie runs through her family’s lavender fields toward the well on the Baines’ place. At the stroke of midnight, she gazes into the water in search of her future. Not finding what she had hoped for, she turns from the well and when the body she sees there in the moonlight is discovered come morning, Annie will have much to explain and a past to account for. It was 1936, and there were seven Baine boys. That year, Annie’s aunt, Juna Crowley, with her black eyes and her long blond hair, came of age. Before Juna, Joseph Carl had been the best of all the Baine brothers. But then he looked into Juna’s eyes and they made him do things that cost innocent people their lives. Sheriff Irlene Fulkerson saw justice served—or did she?  As the lavender harvest approaches and she comes of age as Aunt Juna did in her own time, Annie’s dread mounts. Juna will come home now, to finish what she started. If Annie is to save herself, her family, and this small Kentucky town, she must prepare for Juna’s return, and the revelation of what really happened all those years ago

  • The premise sounds confusing, so here's a quick summary. Annie Holleran crosses into a forbidden territory on a dark night in Kentucky 1952. Even though, she has been well warned by her family members - Annie and her curiosity gets the best of her. This novel is about two families who are surrounded by the evil that has been passed down generations. They are constantly in a feud as well, which has been passed down decades. Every year, young girls at the ages of fifteen, the girls doll up and go the well in the Baine's yard. A legend states the young girl can see the face of the man they are to wed. Yet Annie.. sees nobody in the well. Juna is the other heroine in the novel, she claims.. she saw many different faces in the well, but her story seems less believable. Now Juna and Annie's stories are tied in more ways then they can imagine. Juna is set to come home now, and Annie and her family must prepare for her return and figure out what really happened in past history. This is mainly a historical fiction novel with some paranormal aspects.
  • The characters were intriguing to read about, but there were several of them to keep up with. I did like the two characters Juna and Annie, although I prefered Annie more. Juna seemed quite strange at times.. The book has two different stories revolving around different characters, however, they are tied together. The characters are interconnected with each other, and they're not exactly sure how. The story takes place in an southern area, and the superstitions are accurate to reality as well.
  • The concept of the novel was intriguing enough to consider reading the novel, the writing is compelling enough and it is written beautifully. It's moderately an intense and dark read - the book does drag on quite a bit, and it could have been better if there were less chapters Otherwise, the book is not so bad. The story revolves around two mysteries, and it does go into flashbacks quite often. The world-building plot was executed well because the ending was surprisingly pleasant, I didn't expect that twist at the end. Generally, I can be good at guessing, although, this was not a predictable novel. The mystery and thrill factor was in fact still there.

  1. I am loving this book cover! I haven't heard of this before now but I do enjoy a good thriller & the premise sounds intriguing. I don't tend to enjoy too many characters, it gets a tad confusing so I think that aspect would annoy me too.

  3. This sound so unique but I also don't get the premise at all haha is it a paranormal or an alternate history or a fantasy? Very mysterious summary though

    1. LOOL I understand what you mean, I had to read the premise a few times to understand it. It's more of a historical fiction novel with some paranormal aspects.

  7. I don't really think this book is for me. After reading the synopsis I was more confused than anything else xD I do like the sound of it being well written and the world building having been done well, but I think that the characters being sort of odd would not make me too happy. I am glad this one was a decent read though!

  13. This story sounds fascinating and unIque. I enjoy well written characters, but find it difficult to follow along when there are too many. I like when a story has flashbacks, mystery's to solve, and good world-building, but I get bored after a while if a story drags on too long. Great Review Benish!

  14. Shame it does drag on a bit, but I love dark reads, so I'd probably love it, because it does sound awesome, though I think I'd struggled with the big cast of characters. :(
