  • Synopsis: When nineteen-year-old huntress Feyre kills a wolf in the woods, a beast-like creature arrives to demand retribution for it. Dragged to a treacherous magical land she only knows about from legends, Feyre discovers that her captor is not an animal, but Tamlin-one of the lethal, immortal faeries who once ruled their world. As she dwells on his estate, her feelings for Tamlin transform from icy hostility into a fiery passion that burns through every lie and warning she's been told about the beautiful, dangerous world of the Fae. But an ancient, wicked shadow over the faerie lands is growing, and Feyre must find a way to stop it . . . or doom Tamlin-and his world-forever.

When I first heard about this novel.
When I found out, it's a fairytale retelling of .. BEAUTY & THE BEAST.
Now that I have read it.

  • A Court of Thorns and Roses is the fairytale retelling of Beauty & the Beast with a twist. The huntress Feyre kills a wolf in the woods, little did she know the wolf was actually a high fae, a faerie. Now, another high fae by the name of Tamlin comes to demand compensation for it. Feyre has either two choices: be killed or be a captive to the beast/faerie. Of course, Feyre picks the option to be a captive. Feyre has hostility for Tamlin and his kind of world, soon, the hate turns into passion soon, but an ancient wicked shadow has fallen over the faerie land, and Feyre must find a way to stop it, if not Tamlin and his world are doomed forever.
  • A Court of Thorns and Roses was my most highly anticipated book so far, previously, I had made a WOW post on it. Unpopular opinion time, don't get me wrong, this is still a very good novel with potential, the cover is so gorgeous, and it's my most favorite book cover this year. I really wanted to give it five stars when I finished the novel. I have been waiting for this novel since the beginning of this year. I had even pre-ordered it two months before it's release date. I have read the author's previous work before, Throne of Glass was a disastrous series,  still I wanted to give the author another try. This is so much better than TOG, although it's a bit similar. I liked what I read, but at the same time many things irritated me.
  • A Court of Thorns and Roses is beautifully written, the writing is compelling and fantastic - the beginning was rather slow though. The first three chapters were intriguing and intense, and I couldn't wait to find out what happens next. The actual action doesn't occur until halfway reading into this novel. I don't mind slow beginnings, but this took more than HALFWAY of the book, that's a bit too much. This didn't remind me of Beauty & the Beast. There was no real sense of the "beast" besides his actual form. This novel is more of a Cinderella type retelling, the premise is rather misleading. Feyre has two sisters, they're her biological sisters but they're awful to her. Feyre's mother is dead, Feyre does all the chores in the house, she cooks, she cleans, and she works hunts. She clearly has no say in the house. Enter prince charming, "the beast" who whisks her away & they live happily ever after(not exactly but you get the point).. Seriously, talk about the deception of the premise.
  • Feyre doesn't act like Cinderella though, she's more like fiery Bella of Beauty & the Beast. Feyre is witty, hostile, yet kind at the same time. She's no damsel in distress, she's a kickass heroine, and she can fight. She's portrayed as ordinary, but I can tell she's probably gorgeous from the way males desire her. A personality trait that is rather annoying of Feyre is that her curiosity gets the best of her. There are two scenes in the novel, where Feyre acts stupid when she is clearly told to do something to prevent her from danger. She is called Feyre which is an old faerie legend's name, but humans hate faeries here.. so I'm not sure what else to add about the contradicting aspect of the name. Her name does signify it's importance to the novel though. Tamlin is the beast/wolf, but he's a faerie. I'm not sure how that concept even makes any sense, there are so concepts in this novel that are rather stupid a.k.a "the mask." Tamlin looks like a gorgeous creature most of the time, he looks human. I don't mind that he's beautiful, but I didn't see any cruelty of the beast in A Court of Thorns and Roses. Beastly nature isn't just limited to their looks, you have have an inner beast in you too. Tamlin is portrayed as a good, and a loving creature. How is he a beast then? I'm not saying he should beat up Feyre, but come on atleast say some negative, snarky comments.. He has nothing in common with the original disney beast. Deceptions I tell you..  I still like the male lead Tamlin though, he's a wonderful character and his kindness is infectious. Some of the secondary characters are wonderful as well, Lucian's witty yet dark humor was adorable. He's actually my favorite male character. He reminded me more of the disney beast.
  • The romance was one of my favorite aspects of this novel, it was swoon worthy and steamy. However, even the romance has it flaws. It took almost half of the book, and when it did occur - I didn't find it that genuine. Feyre goes from being hostile and 100 pages later, instantly she is gazing at Tamlin's speckled golden hair.. There wasn't any real romance development. There is a potential love triangle, which quite frankly makes me want to facepalm myself.. hard. Feyre is not swaying to the other male lead.. yet. I have a strong feeling the love triangle will develop more in the second installment. This novel could have worked better without a love triangle. The other male lead was irritating, NOW HE IS DARK, but he's just vile. He's evil, manipulative yet he's fascinating to read about. He's more of the "asshole" type though with his abusive nature so I can't like him. If Feyre ends up liking this douchebag, I'm done with this series. Tamlin will be the guy I would prefer with Feyre in this series though, mainly because I was rooting for him before the other male lead came along, and the second male is a douche bag. I like to think I'm loyal.
  • The magical aspects of A Court of Thorns and Roses were amazing. The second half of the novel is much stronger than the first half. Many fantasy novels have a focus on the romance for the first 60% then the action finally decides to kick in, that's not cool. Even though, the book does have it flaws - the writing amazes me and I do like some of the characters. The actual plot was fascinating, it was quite strong which saved the book for me. The book is a good start to a series, I actually thought it might be standalone novel, I wish it was because I have a feeling this series will be ruined for me with the love triangle.. I do look forward to the rest of the books though, A Court of Thorns and Roses still made me laugh and smile on the bright side.
* SPOILER DISCUSSION ALERT - FOR THOSE WHO HAVE READ THIS NOVEL: What do you guys think will happen in the next installment? I honestly think Rhy will teach Feyre how to read and write. He made a joke about it in the novel. If he forces her sexually or she falls for him, then I AM DONE.*

  1. Well, I'm glad I got to read your review. Honestly, I'm mostly overwhelmed with the avalanche of 5 star reads, so your review brought me down a bit. I'd like to be on even ground before I read this. Lol.

  2. I ended up DNFing this one. There was so much hype to it. I agree how to beginning was slow, that was a major turn off for me. You're review is making me debate on giving it another chance before I meet Sarah next week. Lovely review! :)

  3. I had mied feelings - different mixed feelings, I think. I HATED Rhysand - what he does/lets Feyre do is pretty much sexual assault/borderline rape? Or that's how I see it. I can't seem to get past it. But at the same time, I liked the story. So there's that. I'll be reading the next book for sure though!

    Excellent review! :)

  5. My feelings are similar and I also gave it 3.5 stars rating. Also, I absolutely agree about the fact that if Feyre ends up liking this vile manipulating Rhysand in next book, I will be done with the series as well!

  6. I agree with your first thoughts! I didn't like Throne of Glass at all (but the sequels were better), and while ACOTAR had a lot of similarities, it was ultimately the better read.

I actually got a lot of the Beauty and the Beast references--it wasn't too similar to Cinderella for me. But I agree that the writing was absolutely gorgeous.

And I also agree about the romance! Tamlin = yes. Other guy = heck no. He's manipulative and an asshole--not sure why other people are so drawn to him. I will throw the book across the room if Fayre falls for him.

    Awesome review, Benish! <3

    1. I'm glad you could agree, I didn't like the Throne of Glass series at all, the first book was okay but rest of the books were a disaster. I loved the role of Tamlin in this novel, he was a wonderful character ♥ The second make lead just pissed me off so much, I hope he dies in the second book or something lol thank you Aimee :)

  7. So many people have had mixed feelings about this, which is why even though I do want to read it, I haven't yet. I'm so afraid I won't love it and I just love Sarah's writing and I kind of don't want anything to ruin that. Sounds silly huh?

  11. It's so frustrating when a book begins slow, and there isn't any action or plot twists until your nearing the end of the story. I can see why you have mixed feelings about this story. I wonder why it's considered a Beauty & The Beast retelling, when it clearly lacks the necessary similarities. Great Review! I love how concise you were when it came to explaining and breaking down what you liked and didn't like about the story!

    1. Yes, the action doesn't really occur until more than halfway into the book. It was saddening that the romance took almost half of the book to develop, even the development felt almost insta even though it was 100 pages long.. If that makes any sense lol it's still a good read if you can ignore the flaws. Thank you so much Lindy ♥

  12. Huh, gives me mixed feelings about reading Court. I'm seeing it everywhere and it seems that everyone loves it, so it's interesting to find someone who didn't exactly love everything about it. I wonder if that only happens because of the hype, making people think they like it more than they do. Not that I'd accuse any of the bloggers I know of that. Anyways, thanks for the review!

  13. Great review! I have read a lot of awesome reviews of this book, but I DNF'd Throne of Glass, so I am not sure if I would like this one either, even though it sounds good. I found Throne of Glass was slow as well and not in a good way, so I think I would dislike that in this book as well. I don't mind slow paced book as long as there still are things happening. It also sounds like saying it's a beauty and the beast retelling is a bit misleading and I've heard another reviewer mention those mask, it sounds so weird. I am glad to hear the romance was well done though!

    1. Yes, the Throne of Glass is too overrated, I thought the first book was just okay but the series goes downhill for me afterwards. I have no interest to continue reading it. ACOTAR is way better though, it still have it's flaws but the writing is quite beautiful.

  17. YES. SOMEONE WHO GETS ME. I've been seeing glowing review after glowing review for this, and I can't seem to understand why. Sure, it's not a horrible book, but is it one that deserves 5 stars? Not nearly, in my opinion. I don't know why, but every Sarah J. Maas book I've read has been wonderfully written, but there always seems to be something...missing; and I can't quite figure it out. I felt that way here too. And yes...the potential love triangle was super aggravating. *scowls*

  21. This is so interesting to read, because your thoughts are very different to mine (and i ADORE TOG). The story is much more like the original Beauty and the Beast tale than the Disney version. In the original, Belle/the Beauty has two sisters who are beautiful but vain and selfish, as in ACOTAR. Disney strayed pretty far from the original fairytale.

  23. I've been hearing so many great things about this book but it's also good to read your review to get a different perspective. I think I will probably read this. Throne of Glass and I didn't get along but maybe this one is for me since I love re-tellings. I read a version of Beauty and the Beast though, where Beauty did have two sisters who are spoiled. When her father left they asked for jewels but all Beauty wanted was a rose...and you know the rest. Perhaps the author was thinking of this version? Anyway, I though this is an installment of Throne of Glass! LOL! I'm still going to continue on with that book (it's in my paused shelf) but I think I'll read this first. Awesome balanced review Benish! :)

Maybe, that's what the author was doing portraying the actual classic Beauty & the Beast.. It does give off a more Cinderella type feeling since the beast was just soo sweet and actually handsome. I hope you enjoy it though! Thank you Amir ♥

  29. I've been discussing Rhy and Feyre's relationship with another blogger and I don't think they'll end up together - I actually think that Nesta (the sister) would be a perfect fit for him because she'd kick his nasty ass. And yes, he was so manipulative and weirdly abusive - but protective all at once. He's a confusing character.
As for the masks - ugh. That's all I'm saying.

    1. I think you might still like it overall, I look forward to reading your thoughts though ♥

  41. I do agree, their love was quite instant but I loved Tamlin so much it didn't bother me, because he never stepped the line with Feyre. I think the beast part comes in, with how Tamlin acts with his enemies and stuff, but to his friends and to Feyre he's like a gentle giant. I do think the next installment may give us an impending love triangle, Rhys was rather creepy wasn't he? What a refreshing outlook on the series Benish!

    1. Yes I adored Tamlin's character as well ♥ He's what kept the story going for me, Rhy was super creepy although his character is fascinating as well. Thank you for dropping by Jeann!

  42. Awh, it's a shame that you didn't end up loving this one as much as you thought you would, Benish.

I actually ended up really liking it, which I was worried I wouldn't. THRONE OF GLASS was a two star read for me, so I was afraid the same thing would happen again. Thankfully it didn't. I liked almost everything about this book.

Also: the original tale of Beauty and the Beast is similar to this in the fact that Beauty does have two insipid sisters. Disney changed that in their version, as they do a lot with their adaptations!

I hope you like the second book more, although I must say I hope Feyre and Rhys have something between them - even if it's just friendship. I really like him! XD

  43. I totally agree! Everyone is rating this a 5, when for me, it is more of a 4. There is too much romance in the first half. I loved the overall story arc but the plot doesn't get going until two thirds into the book...that's annoying. Also, what's up with all the unnecessary love triangles? I'm not usually so violently opposed to them, but this is just in place for angst. Sigh...
