  • Synopsis: After the Collapse wiped out more than 90 percent of humanity, the aliens arrived. Known as the E’rikon, they sit within a shielded city, content to ignore the dwindling human settlements. Seventeen-year-old tomboy Jax Mitchell and her twin brother, Jace, are among the survivors, living within the community of Bridgelake. When a terrified yet defiant Jax watches the E’rikon kidnap Jace, she decides to rescue him on her own. Wracked by crippling nightmares and panic attacks, Jax finds an ally in Lir, a handsome teenage E’rikon who was left behind by his ship. The two of them form an unlikely partnership, with Jax guiding Lir through human territory while the alien promises to sneak her into the E’rikon city. But as Jax’s connection with Lir intensifies, she discovers a shocking secret—one that could have catastrophic effects on humans and aliens alike.

  • A deadly virus has mutated, and it has wiped out more than 90 percent of the world, so naturally when Earth is barely populated - someone from the outside will come over to take over. The aliens have arrived known as the E'rikson. They ignore the humans and have no contact with them until they come across Jace. Jax(Jasmine) and Jace are siblings, they're twins and one of the few survivors on Earth. Women are a necessity to the human race since they're so less, they are needed for future offspring's. Jax want's no part of being promised to a man so Jax and her twin Jace hunt to survive. One day, Jace is abducted by the E'rikson, the aliens. Jax can't do anything but watch in a horrifying manner. Soon, she finds a ally in Lir, a young teenager of the E'rikson who was left behind by his ship. The two of them form an alliance, with Jax who will help Lir through human territory and into the city because chances are the humans will kill the alien and Lir has no idea which path leads to where since he is unfamiliar with Earth. The alien promises Jax that he will sneak her into the E'rikson city where she can find her brother. Soon, she discovers a shocking secret that could effect the aliens and humanity forever..
  • Well, hello to this beautiful cover.. Yes to readheads! There's not many in young adult novels when most tend to be blonde or either brunette. The model on the cover is gorgeous though, I also like how Skyscape has an amazing texture to their paperback books. It's so soft, almost like rubber. Anyway, moving on this was a wonderful story to read, and it has been on my TBR for quite some time now! I'm surprised how underrated this novel is, it mainly has good reviews - but not many people are aware of it. PICK IT UP ALREADY. Broken Skies has been compared to many popular novels already, it has similar vibes to Lux, Angelfall, and Alienated but they're all unique books from each other. I have always found aliens fascinating, so it's always great to read more about them.
  • The heroine Jax is a kickass heroine, she is fierce, strong-willed, and badass. It was intriguing to see character growth in her because in the beginning her curiosity does get the best of her and it was fascinating to see her mature in a young lady. The bond between family always gets to me. Sometimes, I favor books more about family than romance. Romance is always sweet to have, but it's not required. Family is everything, they're blood or close to it.. I find books that emphasize family than romance are more stronger, those are the type of books that can make me cry such as If I Stay, and Angelfall. The alien Lir was amazing in his own way as well, it  bothers me when aliens look somewhat human-like because I don't think in reality they ever do.. if they even exist. Theresa Kay offers something new in her book, the aliens eyes, funky hair, and body texture was unique. There is a stereotype of aliens looking small, machine-like, and kind of ugly.. but I don't believe they would ever really look completely like humans either since they're from a different planet and a different world. Lir's a wonderful character to read about, you can't help but fall in love with him. I so shipped the romance between Lir and Jax. There is no insta-love in this novel, the relationship does have a love and hate relationship in the beginning. The insta attraction was annoying though..  but it does progress into like once they are more comfortable around each other. Their relationship took gradual turns to develop which I find adorable and swoon worthy. I just wish the romance wasn't as angst, it's like one minute Jax trusts Lir, then she doubts him again based on suspicion, not cool. The secondary characters were unique in their ways as well especially Jace and the friend Flint.
  • The world-building I was anticipated badly, and it was even greater than I expected although the plot twist wasn't as surprising. It was predictable ultimately. I couldn't put this novel down, I was so tired and sleepy yet I kept on reading and reading to find out what happens next. The plot is fast-paced and I was anxiously waiting for the ending to reveal itself. There isn't exactly a cliffhanger, but it does feel like one since you don't want the book to end. I cannot wait to read on what happens next with this series!
“.. But knowing about something and knowing what it feels like are two completely different things.”

Recommended for fans of Angelfall, The 5th wave, Lux, and Alienated.

  1. I was definitely one of those people who didn't know about this one until now either! I am glad you really do appreciate the copy you have as well - some books are so beautiful and no one appreciates the feel of them! I can't wait to try it, and seeing as I have never heard of it and know how much you loved it, I am going to add it to my TBR now!

  3. This is the first time I have seen this one and I like the sound of it. You don't get too many books featuring aliens in YA and when I see one I usually snatchit up, especially if it is rated highly like this one. Thanks for the recommendation.

  5. I haven't read that many books about aliens, only the Gini Koch series (some of them) but this one sounds lovely Benish!

  6. I agree with you, if aliens do exists I think chances are small they look similar to us, I mean what are the changes that in two places very far away from each other, the same type of creature develops? I guess for romance purposes it's more convenient to have aliens look like human, but it would be interesting to read a romance novel with aliens that are really different. It's a nice cover, although not one that would catch my attention if I hadn't read your review or heard more about this book. I like slow building romances and it's nice to read about strong families now and then as well. Great review!

    1. I'm glad you could agree Lola, and yes that's true for romance purposes they do look like humans.. Although, in the fairytale Beauty & The Beast - the beast didn't look human, I think it would make a more powerful impact if the aliens looked different. Thank you Lola ♥

  7. Oh wow 5 Stars!!! I love discovering underrated books and this one definitely sounds great because there's more emphasis on family that romance. I do ship characters more when they're not constantly thrown in my face because there's that anticipation...hence the shipping. ;) I agree that it bothers me when aliens are human-like too, unless if they explained it very well. Great review Benish! I'm checking this book out now! :D

  9. Whoa! This sounds really good! I actually OWN this book, I just never got around to reading it- I suppose I need to get on it, huh? I am so glad that the worldbuilding is good too, sometimes that can fall flat in a book like this- also, actual alien-aliens? Yes! Finally! You are going to make me readjust my whole reading schedule, I suppose :) Thanks for the fabulous review (and reminding me that I own this book!)

  11. I totally adore how you write your reviews, btw. SO MUCH LOVE. Ahem. But also...underrated book? Huge emphasis on family? All-round incredibleness?! WHY HAVE I NOT HEARD OF THIS BOOK?! I NEED IT. I love books about family! it trumps romance every time for me, so this is definitely going on my TBR. I'm running to goodreads. *dashes off*

  14. The concept reminds me so much of The 5th Wave, but perhaps less intense. I prefer strong family relationships rather than romance. More often than not, young adult authors just completely stuff it up and throw instant love in there. It ruins even the more engaging books. This sounds awesome though. It's so hard to find a great alien based young adult book or series and this sounds like one of the better ones out there. Wonderful review Benish, really enjoyed it <3

    1. Yes, the novel has been compared to many other books previously published, maybe that's why it's underrated? Otherwise, it's totally unique in it's own way though, the concepts are similar but the plots are very different ♥ Thank you Kelly!

  15. I do love a good kickass heroine, and while I do like my romance when I'm in the mood for it, always love ones that focus more on the family dynamics and bonds. The romance sounds fun and slow burn, but yeah, so with you on the angst, hate it.

  16. I love it when you find an underrated book and it's AMAZING and you just want to share it with the world. That has happened to me recently, and I think it's great!

I'm glad you liked this one, Benish! The premise sounds familiar and unique at the same time, which is always interesting. And plus, a kickass heroine and a love-hate relationship AND great sibling bond? it sounds like BROKEN SKIES ticks a lot of boxes for a good YA novel.

I'll definitely be checking this one out - thanks for the lovely review! ^.^

  19. Lately, I am finding that I don't mind predictable novels as long as it keeps the reader in me engaged, which I think this book has done to you. I would love a page-turner! It's a long time coming for me as I haven't read books lately that I read in a single sitting, glued to the pages. Plus, ALIENS! Aliens are good for the health! Good for the soul! Give me more of 'em please (as long as they don't look completely human... that pisses me off lol)
