Synopsis: Two years after the sinking of the Titanic, fifteen year-old Rebecca Crowe’s fascination with icebergs leads her to save a shipwrecked survivor, Samuel Dalton, the nineteen-year old son of a Toronto medical family. Love sparks in the crystal cave of an iceberg but is thwarted by an unreasonable father and the Great War that drags Samuel and his brother, Matthew, to the Western Front as medical officers. Knowing Rebecca is home and safe in Newfoundland brings Samuel great comfort. But as the war moves towards its final harrowing days, they both discover that tragedy and terror can strike anywhere, setting their love on an unforeseen path. Only when Samuel and Rebecca can fully come to terms with such devastating loss and their impossible choices can their love soar. With an emotional intensity reminiscent of The Bronze Horseman, Seldom Come By, named after an actual place in Newfoundland, is an unforgettable journey across waves and time and the full spectrum of human emotions.

Well.. I was quite surprised at the length of this novel when I received it. The book itself is huge. It required a lot of reading so I was hoping it would turn out to be a great book! Let's see now .. I adore historical fiction, I wouldn't say it's my favorite genre, but I love books set in a historical time. It helps me learn more about the time and place it took place - we should have these novels in educational settings instead of giant textbooks which teach us nothing.

  • I haven't read too many novels on icebergs, actually I haven't read any novels based on this setting. The only thing close to it I've seen is the movie Titanic. The concept itself is really amazing - two teens on a iceberg. Rebecca and Samuel cross each other's paths and change each other's lives in various ways. Rebecca discovers Samuel when she saves him from a shipwreck. Finally, we have a novel where the heroine actually saves the hero, instead of vice versa. I liked the relationship they had with each other, it was intriguing. Rebecca and Samuel are basically opposite attracts. Samuel is quite different from Rebecca and her family. The author sure has a fine eye for imagery as well, I liked reading about the various  landscapes and scenes. It was vivid in detail, and I could literally picture the places in my mind. I liked that this novel wasn't solely a love story. Seldom Come By also focuses on the Canadian War experiences and the hardships people suffered, as well as the nation. It is about family, forgiveness, and consequences.
  • As I have said before, the book itself is quite lengthy and takes a while to finish even if you're a fast reader like I am. Perhaps, it would have been better if the book was more shorter. I loved reading about the descriptions, and vivid imagery in this novel. I felt as if I was with the characters as well. At some parts the book did drag on though, it could have worked better for the book if it had less pages. This is a cute read overall, it did have potential.

  3. Oh, this sounds like a TERRIFIC read! Like you, I've never read any romance or historical novels with an iceberg setting. Very intriguing! I'm not entering the giveaway, though, because I do prefer printed books. So I'm adding this one to my TBR, as well as my Amazon wish list. Thanks for the great review!! : )

  4. This sounds like a pretty unique book! I have never heard of one written in this setting either or about icebergs, and it seems like it was well written. It's a shame it's so long though, because sometimes it can seem like it was dragged out in places. Overall, sounds good!
