High Standards of Literature | Top Ten Must reads in Contemporary Young Adult ♥

Thursday, July 02, 2015

High Standards of Literature is a new feature I created to share my top ten.. sometimes 15 favorite books in each genre.

Sometimes, I'll be doing honorably mentions as well that didn't make the list. Most of these are my all-time favorites and the books that have set the highest standard for me in literature. These are the exceptional books that will stay with me forever. (I'll also do updated lists but that might take a year or so). I have a lot of interesting ideas that go beyond genre later for this meme/feature so be on the look out :) I even got my younger brother hooked on this feature. I'm a very diverse reader, and I read a broad of genres and at least twenty books a month. Today's genre is Contemporary in Young Adult which is one of my favorites. I love cute, fluffy books that can make you feel. These are accurate to reality too.

  • Just Listen by Sarah Dessen is my all-time favorite book in the contemporary, young adult genre. It's similiar to the book Speak except this book has actually made me cry. I had first read this book in middle school and it has stayed my most loved book in this genre even till l now. It is about a girl name Annabel who seems to have the perfect life but it's not.. She meets Owen, who is an outcast and together they must face what really happened to Annabel's life. The male, love interest Owen is also one of my favorite fictional characters in books. THIS IS A MUST READ.
  • The Truth about Forever by Sarah Dessen. Need I say more? The author is by far my most favorite contemporary author whose novels I have liked, most I have loved. I have re-read all of her books atleast eight times. This book is about Macy, her boyfriend is at Brain Camp and she meets a guy name Wes. It's not a book about cheating, don't worry. The author's books are usually about coming of age and discovery yourself. Once again, the author is spectacular at creating catchy and dreamy male fictional leads.
  • Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher is an emotional roller coaster, I have read this book once and I don't like I'll ever read it again because it's just so damn depressing. This has made me cry about three times.. I would still really recommend this novel because it does inspire a person. Now, it is about someone who has committed suicide, but what I learned from this story is the suicide could have been prevented if someone had stood by Hannah's side. If someone had still tried to reach her even if she pushed them away. It has taught me to fight for others and help those in need and that's the best thing a book could do: inspire you. The ending is unforgettable.
  • The Distance Between Us by Kasie West  is one of the cutest contemporary novels out there. This book is just adorable and I can't stress that enough. It has snark, humor, and a kickass heroine. Caymen Meyer's is from the poor class and Xander Spence is from the rich, upper class and soon their paths cross and it begins a love-hate relationship. I wasn't a fan of Kasie West's novel On The Fence, but I have loved all of her other books. She can take cliche concepts and turn them into something amazing. There's something magical in her writing. I stalk all of her interviews too, she's so snarky and hilarious.
  • The Fill in Boyfriend by Kasie West is just full of adorable things. The heroine is not likeable, but she does grow on you eventually. This novel is about Gia Montgomery who must find a "fill in boyfriend" after her real boyfriend Bradley dumps her on the day of prom, now this book has made me cry twice.

  • Out of Control by Sarah Alderson is a novel that reminds me of the Fast & Furious movies. It's fast paced and it actually has a love story in it. It's about a girl name Liva who witnesses a murder happen, she comes across Jay who is a criminal, a thief. Together, they must find ways to survive throughout the night. It's really cute, and I did not expect myself to like it so much.
  • If I Stay by Gayle Forman is a novel that has stayed with me throughout high school and college life. It's about Mila who is an car accident with her family, now as her body is in shock and coma - she has an out of body experience and she must decide wheather she wants to live or die.. I loved this book, that ending made me bawl over. It's ironic how Adam's famous speech made me cry and everything else that was traumatic in this book didn't. The author sure can write amazing novels.
  • Stolen by Lucy Christopher was the first book I read about Stockholm Syndrome.. besides Beauty & The Beast. It's honestly one of the most intriguing books I have read, now this is a squeak clean novel about a kidnapping and aduction. Gemma is kidnapped by Ty who has been in love with her for years.. Now that ending was fantastic, I feel this is how books about kidnappers should end. I did love Ty though even though he is messed up. It's one novel that is unforgettable.
  • This Song Will Save Your Life by Leila Sales is about Elise who has been bullied and she is on the verge of suicide.. It's about a girl who discovers a new life in the underground world of partying and DJ'ing. Now, I loved this novel and I also liked Char as well. It's a strong, contemporary novel about bullying.
  • Emmy & Oliver by Robin Benway is one of the cutest contemporary novels I have read this year, I'm also fond of that simple yet beautiful cover. Emmy & Oliver used to be best friends until Oliver disappeared..Oliver realizes he's been kidnapped by his father and now he has returned to his childhood home where he meets Emmy once again. Simply adorable, I also love how the author stands against slut-shaming and cliche concepts.
Thank you for reading this! Have an amazing month of June - Leave your blog links in the comments & I'll be sure to check them out & drop by :) Stay in tuned pretty creatures.. P.s I have final exams till Thursday for summer classes so I might not be able to update until they're over x

  6. I honestly thought I wasn't a fluffy/cutesy contemporary person, I mean, what got me back into reading was Twilight (shhhh, don't laugh, I was 14 haha) as much as I read now and the more I read after reading that I figured out Twilight wasn't the shit, but I still pretty much only read paranormal stuff. Blogging has totally changed that (and well, Kasie West) because now I adore these reads, and Kasie West is the shit. And Robin Benway is because have you read any of her others? I've been binge reading them with review books the last two weeks and oh my god, she's right up there with Kasie West for me right now. Just adorable and I love how she portrays good and realistic parents-kids relationships.

  7. I read four out of the ten books you've losted - The Truth About Forever, Just Listen, Thirteen Reasons Why and If I Stay, and I agree that they're all good. Those ten books would definitely not be in my top 10 contemps list but they're good very choices :))) I think some of my 10th fav contemps of all time would be Sleepaway Girls, The Fault in Our Stars, Weightless, My Secret Hollywood Life... that's pretty much it sadly. Can't think of any others. After all, my favorite genre is fantasy, urban fantasy :P

  8. I adored Sarah Dessen's books when I was younger, they were so thought-provoking and meaningful, and at one point in the middle of reading Lock & Key, I wanted to become a social worker to help make a difference in the world. Didn't end up as one, but I'm so grateful for the ways that her books have shaped my teen years.

Lots of great books here that I unfortunately have yet to read...eep! Thanks for sharing Benish xx

  9. I'm very picky and sometimes iffy with ya contemporary romance ever since, but I'm rectifying that by reading a lot of contemporary books lately :) I'm also a fan of West! All her books make me tingly and light-air happy! <3 I have yet to read the other books in this list especially Sarah Dessen books! :D

It's been awhile since I've been in here in your blog :( Busy busy busy times :^( Have a good day. Fantastic post, Benish!

  11. I haven't read any of these :( However, that gives me a great list of remarkable books to try out. I bought Kasie Wests books, because I read her Pivot Point series, and enjoyed it. I also bought If I Stay because I've heard it's so good! I want to try out Sarad Dessen for sure :) I'm looking forward to this new feature. It means more quality books will be added to my TBR. Thanks for sharing.

  12. OH man I have ONLY read Emmy & Oliver from this list, which I guess is no surprise because I don't read contemporary as much as other people do. Like Sarah Dessen. I think I have only read one Sarah Dessen book in my life, and I don't even remember what it was called!

  13. I haven't read any of these from this list, but I am glad to know that you have some books which you know will always stay with you! I have a copy of Emmy and Oliver which is soon going to be read, so I hope I love it as much as you did! I have read a few Sarah Dessen but I am beginning to think that author isn't for me because I didn't love them. Great collection though <3

  16. So I went to the Toronto Book Swap event yesterday and got Just Listen by Sarah Dessen! I'm so glad you love it Benish because I've actually never read a Sarah Dessen book before O.o Weird, I know! I also loved Thirteen Reasons Why...I'm the same, I loved the book but I still can't re-read it because it's so heartbreakingly sad...Such an awesome book though! I like If I Stay too although I love Where She Went more. This is a great list of books Benish, I really need to read Stolen. I've seen it around and know a general background of the story but I just haven't gotten the chance to read it. -Amir

  18. I haven't read all of these (or even close to it!) though a LOT of them are on my TBR! I have read The Truth About Forever, If I Stay, and Emmy & Oliver. E&O would absolutely make a Top 10 contemporary for me! I enjoyed the other 2 also, but I don't know that they'd make my top 10. Still very solid choices! I must get to the rest of these now :)

  19. I haven't read any of these :o think I'll have to fix that immediately, as a few of them sound like my cup of tea. Thank you for sharing (and expanding my never ending TBR :P )

  20. I haven't read any of these, but heard/ seen most of them around. There are only very little contemporary romances that I give a 5 star rating, I don't think I could even reach the 10 at this point. I am looking forward to other posts you do as part of this feature :)

  22. Hope your exams went well, Benish!

I loved If I Stay and Just Listen is my favorite Sarah Dessen, even more than The Truth About Forever. It was just oh-so-good! To hear that you read it in middle school makes me completely old!

Oh, my gosh, Stolen! I so wish Lucy would write a follow-up so we could see what happened. I know it's all kinds of messed up but I wanted a HEA after Ty did some penance.

    Fab post, Benish! :)
