  • Synopsis: After losing both her parents before age 17, aspiring designer Caitlin Holte feels like her whole world has been turned upside down, and that was before the terrifying encounter with a supernatural force. Then, she learns that her hot bad-boy neighbor, Adrian--who might have just saved her life--is actually a half-demon vampire.  Suddenly Caitlin is stuck with a vampire bodyguard who feels that the best way to protect her is to become her pretend boyfriend. Trouble is, Caitlin is starting to fall in love for real, while Adrian can never love a human. Caitlin trusts Adrian to keep her safe from his demon father, but will he be able to protect her heart?

  • Caitlin Holte is an aspiring designer who has lost both of her parents before she even turned the age of seventeen. Now, she believes her life is a wreck and she does feel helpless at times. She moves to Stony Creek, New York to live with my maternal aunt and her family. She later has an encounter with a paranormal force, his name is Adrian and he is a half-demon vampire. Now, she is stuck with a vampire boyfriend. Adrian believes she is more safer and more protected from his demon father if he pretends to be her boyfriend. Of course, in the case of pretense someone actually does fall for the other person and in this case it's Caitlin. Adrian can't love a human being, so what happens now?
  • I am so glad I own an actual print copy of this book, the cover is actually gorgeous. I find the background beautiful, and the font Velvet wrapping around the girl's arm - I don't believe I've seen such editing before so kudos to the great cover designer. As a reader of paranormal romance I was intrigued, the aspect of forbidden love was interesting as well. Bodyguard romance books are one of my favorites, so I was hoping this one was as good as it sounded. To not ramble on, this was a good story, although the twilight fan fiction was too much at times. I'm not a fan of twilight, although I liked the movie. I don't know how to feel about a creepy stalkerish vampire who also happens to be hot.
  • Caitlin is feisty, and quite angry at the loss of her parents. Her character did make me giggle though, it's nice when heroines can be witty and charming at the same time. The twilight aspect might make Adrian sound creepy as Edward, but he's not. He's actually better. He's actually a nice guy, I didn't get the bad boy vibe from him which is great because nice guys are awesome too. The secondary characters were fairly interesting as well such as, Adrian's younger brother Lucian. The actual friendship between Caitlin and Adrian is swoon worthy and it is actually cute. It's not really actual romance yet, it's more slow burn and they're more as friends than actual lovers. It's more of a cute, fluffy romance which would be perfect for this warm weather. They had several adorable dialogues as well, you can't help but smile when you read them.
  • Temple West is a talented writer, she has the ability to compel a reader to finish the book. I was excited enough to want to know what happens next. Although, this does a feel of Twilight, the plots are similar too, but I did like it much better. It is more of a minimal plot though, it does lack in the world building department, which isn't too bad because it's more of a character driven book. There is more humor in the book, Caitlin is more feisty and likeable and Adrian is dreamy! However, Velvet is a long book, it is over 400+ pages, some scenes did tend to drag on than others. The novel could have worked better if it was under 300 pages. Furthermore, the ending dropped a huge bombshell which I found fascinating! This could have been one whole novel, I'm tired of reading series though. This of course has a cliffhanger in the end, but I would check out the next installment in the series when it comes out.
“You’re cute when you do that,” he called to me.
“When I do what?”

“Turn in a circle like that. It’s kind of penguin-y.”

“Great,” I called back. “Just what every girl dreams of being told by their inhumanly attractive, immortal vampire protector: they look kind of ‘penguin-y.”

Recommended for fans of Twilight, and The Fill In Boyfriend.

  1. I actually liked this book. It's funny, I didn't even think of how close it was to Twilight until 2/3s the way in, lol I must be blind.

  4. I think that's one of the reasons I needed a break from Paranormal romance books, because of the similarities to the Twilight books, so I'm kind of wary before I end up picking one up. But I'm glad to see that you did enjoy this one overall and Caitlin does sound like a great character. Great review! :)

  5. I'm one of the view who liked Twilight, it certainly got me back into reading after all those years, but I think it's been a trope that's been overdone now. You're spot on Benish, this probably would have worked if it had of been shorter, 400 pages and not all that much happening can feel like it drags on and on. The premise reminds me a little of The Lux series by Jennifer Armentrout and Twilight mashed together. Entertaining, but it sounds a bit too drawn out to reach that conclusion. Glad you were able to enjoy it for the most part though. Fantastic review! <3

    1. Thank you for sharing your thoughts Kelly :) & glad you could agree. I felt some parts did drag on quite a bit, a more reasonable page length could have worked better for the novel, otherwise the content itself wasn't bad.

  7. I've never heard of this one but to be honest, I'm not too sure if I'd like it because Twilight was just not my cup of tea AT ALL.

Loved the review though, girl! <33

  9. I adore that cover so much. Honestly. I am debating whether to add this book to my TBR just because of it xD But at the same time I am someone who really doesn't like fanfiction, so maybe the closeness would bother me somewhat? Especially as I am one of those people who did love Twilight.

    1. I agree, it is one of the most unique covers I have seen. It is a pretty cute novel though, maybe you might like it? You can always try the sample first few chapters, they're usually on Amazon once the book releases.

  10. Glad the romance is more light and fun than intense and ugh, because of the obvious reasons that I find it creepy. And glad it's more slow burn too, I kind of prejudged it by the cover that it would instalove. Ha! I'm the opposite, I mean, I liked Twilight less and less the more I read (but it did get me back into reading, so I'll always appreciate it) but I liked the books more than the movies, I called it quits after New Moon.

    1. I agree, I didn't like the Twilight series either. It was just an ordinary insta-love story. I prefer this book Velvet over it though.

  11. The cover sounds prettier in person. I love it anyways looking at it here. Everything was going good and then you related Velvet to Twilight... I don't know. The way Adrian and Caitlin talk to each other kind of sounds too young for me which is sad to think about, but most likely true. I don't know. It does sound like it would be a fun read. Maybe. Lovely review Benish (:

  13. I haven't heard much about this book before. It sounds interesting, but your Twilight connection has me worried. That with the length issue, and you've only rated it 3.5, I think this might just be a library checkout for me.

  15. The cover is definitely breath taking, although all the comparisons to Twilight kind of make me shy away from this book. Caitlin sounds like a great fiesty character to read about though. Lovely review Benish!
